Real Talk: Student Engagement and Collaborative Discussion

When you think of a typical classroom, what do you picture? Many of us probably envision 30 or so students, all lined up in rows of desks, staring blankly at a teacher who tries their best to hammer home their curriculum.

At EXPLO Elevate, we think a little differently.

We prioritize student engagement, which is why when we are called on to help schools with curriculum design, we always keep in mind partiipation and engagement. One tool we’ve developed to increase engagement in classroom discussions is ECDM: EXPLO’s Collaborative Discussion Method.

With ECDM, every student has a hand in the direction of the discussion, ensuring it stays on topic, but also allowing for many perspectives to enlighten the conversation. It reinforces the content in ways a traditional lecture simply can not. Granting students agency in their learning allows them to feel a sense of ownership and pride over the quality of their discussions. It empowers them.
